The Deleted Scenes

When production on the Escaflowne television series first began, an assumption was made about the length of the broadcast time slot. That assumption turned out to be incorrect. As a result, the Sunrise animators and writers had remove about material from episodes 1-4 and 6-7 in order to please the television channel and the producers.

The deleted scenes were later restored for VHS and DVD release in Japan. However, they have never been released outside Japan, and thus remain mostly unknown to foreign fans.

The scenes chosen for deletion were not crucial to the plot of the series, but they did expand upon the nature of the characters. One deleted scene also contained a selection of Yoko Kanno background music that was not used anywhere else in the series.

The list below details the deleted scenes. Dialogue translations are courtesy of the Gray Phantom Group. A few insignificant cuts, such as split-second landscape shots, are not listed. For screencaptures of most the listed scenes, please visit the Screenshots page.

Episode 1: Fateful Confession
  • Uchida Yukari speaks to Amano immediately prior to Hitomi's race. The dialogue can not be heard. When they realize they are being watched by Hitomi, they both turn and Amano waves.
Episode 2: The Girl From The Mystic Moon
  • After Hitomi has been taken to Gaia, Amano and Uchida Yukari are seen standing outside Hitomi's home. They have just told Hitomi's mother what happened at the shrine. Yukari cries and Amano comforts her.

Amano: It's OK, Uchida. Hitomi's mother believed our story. She said that Hitomi will be back for sure. Until this happens, I'll stay in Japan.

Uchida Yukari: Senpai. (This is a Japanese word that usually translates as "upper-classman" in a school context or "mentor" in other contexts. It is more respectful then just saying the individual's name.)

  • Hitomi's mother sits sadly inside, wondering where her daughter has gone. She goes to the window and looks into the sky as though in prayer.

  • While Ruhm transports Hitomi and Van to Fanelia in his cart, he talks at length about the Mystic Moon.

Ruhm: After a long time, the Mystic Moon is showing up again in the sky of our village. Speaking of which, there is a legend among the Wolf People. According to it, a connection once existed between our world and the Mystic Moon. To think that it could have been true...

  • Following Hitomi's vision of Fanelia's destruction in Ruhm's cart, Ruhm makes another comment about the Mystic Moon.

Ruhm: Now that you mention it, the Mystic Moon has been a lot brighter than usual lately. All these strange things must be happening because of it.

  • Balgus talks to the Fanelian generals about Van and Folken.

Green, Yellow, Red Generals: Three days have been passed... If Lord Van doesn't come back soon... What will happen to Fanelia? Don't tell me Lord Van will abandon the right of coronation just like his older brother, Lord Folken? Balgus, what are your thoughts on this? (Because their backs are to the viewer, there is no way to tell which general says which bit of dialogue. However, since there are three voices, it seems that each general gets one line each.)

Balgus: I, who have had the honor of being Lord Van's educator... I know that he has trained all these years for this purpose. Even if his own limbs were ripped off by the Dragon... He would never run away from the situation. All of this is to erase the shame brought upon the Fanel family by his older brother, Lord Folken.

  • Merle and Hitomi are seen waiting for Van's coronation. Hitomi wonders why she has been given a seat of importance, and looks around at the crowd with discomfort.

Hitomi: Oh, my. Balgus-san really didn't have to worry about me...
Episode 3: The Gallant Swordsman
  • After the Vione arrives at Castelo, Gaddes comes to announce the visitors to Allen. Allen politely recommends that Hitomi stay where she is, and then much less politely insists that Van stay as well. In the process, Allen manages to deeply insult Van by refusing to call him by his official royal title. Van glares. Allen then departs to meet with Dilandau.

Gaddes: Captain, it's the Zaibach Empire.

Allen: Don't worry. If they wanted to attack this castle, they would have already attacked. Tell the soldiers to stay calm. Hitomi-san, for now, don't leave the room, please. King of Fanelia... No, I mean, Van Fanel, you as well. So, until later.

  • A transponder beam is seen being fired from the Vione toward Zaibach.

  • Dilandau is seen with his Dragonslayers prior to entering the fort of Castelo. Chesta appears to have trouble holding up the Zaibach banner.

Dilandau: What the hell is this thing? Looks more like a fortress than a castle... Forward, raise our flag!

  • Van begs Gaddes to allow them to leave the room and see the visitors. Gaddes eventually gives in.

Gaddes: I'm telling you. You can't leave the room.

Van: I just want to see the faces of the ones that attacked Fanelia.

Gaddes: And then what are you gonna do?

Van: I want to know the faces of those who destroyed my country.

    Gaddes: For crying out loud...

  • Prior to the battle between Escaflowne and Scherazade, the Mole Man takes bets from the Castelo men.
Episode 4: The Diabolical Adonis
  • After Van discovers the poison seed on Merle, he walks over to Allen and Hitomi and sees them holding hands. Embarrassed, Hitomi pulls her hand away, and speaks to Van with false cheer to cover it up. Van merely turns and walks out the door. As he does, Hitomi calls out his name.

    Hitomi: What?... Van!

  • Following Van's departure, Natal comes to sit on Allen's shoulder. Allen gets up to leave, so that he can prepare his men for possible attack.

Allen: He will come back soon. I'll go on a patrol around the castle.

Hitomi: Allen-san... Please be careful. The giants are really coming.

Allen: If anything happens, I will protect you.

  • A Dragonslayer is seen discovering a hidden entrance to Castelo. This explains how the Zaibach forces were able to break into the fort so easily.

  • Before Van returns with the poison cure, Merle is seen having a nightmare. She wakes up with a scream, which in turn startles Hitomi.
Episode 6: City Of Intrigue
  • As his crew prepares for arrival in Pallas, Allen stares out the window of the Crusade and broods. Gaddes catches him doing this and makes a face. Then he startles Allen by speaking to him.

Teo: Let's change the altitude to 2,000.

Reeden: We'll soon be at Pallas.

Teo: Katz! Keep a watch out for southern air currents!

    Katz: I know already!

Gaddes: Captain, we'll be arriving at Pallas soon... Is anything wrong?

    Allen: No... It's nothing.

  • On board the Crusade, Allen makes his way to Hitomi and proceeds to hit on her, even bending down to kiss her. He never actually makes lip contact, however, and retreats.

Allen: Hitomi, we'll soon be in the capital of Asturia, Pallas.

    Hitomi: Allen-san, I...

Allen: There's no reason to worry. Asturia is our country. There shouldn't be anyone who would try to harm you, but that special power of yours... We should keep it secret between just us. Girls as sweet as you are easily targeted.

  • As Allen leaves the bridge of the Crusade, he tosses a command to Gaddes with a dismissive gesture. Gaddes gives him a thumbs-up in return. Meanwhile, in the background, Hitomi falls over and hits her head on the glass window because she is in shock over the near-kiss.

Allen: Gaddes, I leave the landing preparations to you.

    Gaddes: Understood.

    Hitomi: Allen-san... Ow!

  • Merle goes in search of Van. While she is at it, she speaks briefly to Oruto.

Oruto: What'cha doin', kitten? We're about to land.

    Merle:
    Have you seen Lord Van?

Oruto: The King? Yeah, he's in back with his guymelef... Hey! When we descend it's going to get shaky, so be careful.

    Merle: I get it!

  • In Pallas, Millerna is seen giving orders to her maids regarding the clean-up of Hitomi. Merle is unnerved by the orders and bites a table.

Millerna: Be sure to burn some smell-purifying incense, so that the stench of sweat and animals doesn't remain.

  • Hitomi is given a bath by Asturian maids, and is quite embarrassed about it.

Handmaiden: I'm going to pour the water now.

Hitomi: OK... I'm happy to be able to take a bath again, but I can't calm down at all like this!
Episode 7: Unexpected Partings
  • King Aston is seen speaking to his two closest advisors in the courtyard after dinner. They discuss what to do with the Escaflowne and Hitomi. As the men speak of Hitomi she is shown in a vision, praying in her Asturian dress in front of the dual moons. A flashback scene reveals that the the Mole Man is the person responsible for her cover being blown.

Advisor: There was a message from the Zaibach garrison. It seems they've caught scent of Escaflowne.

King Aston: Even if we were to turn it over now, it wouldn't benefit our country. If we learn why they are so interested in it, we should be able to keep them back. That reminds me… There was a strange girl Allen brought with him. That collector of all things rare, Meiden, said he'd pay good money for her.

    Advisor: For that handmaiden?

King Aston: There was an informant. According to him, she's apparently an inhabitant from the Mystic Moon! Probably just some country-girl from one of the villages.

  • Hitomi has a dream in which a pleasant tarot reading is interrupted when the Chariot card comes to life. Hitomi then wakes up with a start.

Hitomi: The Three of Fishes. A friend will become a lover… The Wheel of Fortune. A sudden change of the situation... I've got a good spread here!

  • After waking, Hitomi notices Merle curled up on her bed. Hitomi yanks on the covers, causing Merle to slide off like a slab of bacon. Hitomi then proceeds to leave the room for some fresh air.

Hitomi: A dream?... Heavy! You stupid cat!... Ouch... Hot.
