Introduction

When the Escaflowne television series went into production, a unique problem was discovered. The Sunrise animators and writers had prepared too much material to fit into the allotted broadcast timeslot. In order to make the episodes fit the schedule, a number of scenes were removed.

Naturally the scenes chosen for deletion were not crucial to the plot of the series, but they did expand upon the nature of the characters and — in at least one case — introduced a unique and rather surprising plot twist. One deleted scene also contained a selection of Yoko Kanno background music that was not used anywhere else in the series.

The list below details the deleted scenes. A few insignificant cuts, such as split-second landscape shots, are not listed. For screencaptures of the listed scenes, please visit the Screenshots page.

Episode 1: Fateful Confession
  • Yukari speaks to Amano immediately prior to Hitomi's race. The dialogue can not be heard. When they realize they are being watched by Hitomi, they both turn and Amano waves.
Episode 2: The Girl From The Mystic Moon
  • After Hitomi has been taken to Gaia, Amano and Yukari are seen standing outside Hitomi's home. They have just told Hitomi's mother what happened at the shrine. Yukari cries and Amano comforts her.

  • Hitomi's mother sits sadly inside, wondering where her daughter has gone. She goes to the window and looks into the sky as though in prayer.

  • Balgus talks to the Fanelian generals about Folken.

  • Merle and Hitomi are seen waiting for Van's coronation. Hitomi wonders why she has been given a seat of importance, and looks around at the crowd with discomfort.
Episode 3: The Gallant Swordsman
  • After the Vione arrives at Castelo, Gaddes comes to announce the visitors to Allen. Allen politely recommends that Hitomi stay where she is, and then much less politely insists that Van stay as well. In the process, Allen manages to deeply insult Van by refusing to call him by his official royal title. Van glares. Allen then leaves to meet with Dilandau, ordering Gaddes to make sure the two remain in the room.

  • A transponder beam is seen being fired from the Vione toward Zaibach.

  • Dilandau is seen with his Dragonslayers prior to entering the fort of Castelo. Chesta appears to have trouble holding up the Zaibach banner.

  • Van begs Gaddes to allow them to leave the room and see the visitors. Gaddes eventually gives in.

  • Prior to the battle between Escaflowne and Scherazade, the Mole Man takes bets from the Castelo men.
Episode 4: The Diabolical Adonis
  • After Van discovers the poison seed on Merle, he speaks to Allen and then leaves.

  • Allen speaks with Hitomi at some length while she is ill in bed. During this scene, Natal comes to sit on Allen's shoulder. Eventually Allen gets up to leave, so that he can prepare his men for the likely attack.

  • A Dragonslayer is seen discovering a hidden entrance to Castelo. This explains how the Zaibach forces were able to break into the fort so easily.

  • Before Van returns with the poison cure, Merle is seen having a nightmare. She wakes up with a scream, which in turn startles Hitomi.
Episode 6: City Of Intrigue
  • Prior to arriving in Pallas, Allen spends a great deal of time staring out the window of the Crusade and brooding. Gaddes catches him doing this and makes a face at him. Then he startles Allen by speaking to him. Allen and Gaddes speak briefly and Allen begins to cheer up.

  • Allen makes his way to Hitomi and proceeds to hit on her shamelessly, even bending down to kiss her. He never actually makes lip contact, however, and retreats.

  • As Allen leaves the bridge of the Crusade, he tosses a command to Gaddes with a dismissive gesture. Gaddes gives him a thumbs-up in return. Meanwhile, in the background, Hitomi falls over and hits her head on the glass window because she is in shock over her near-kiss.

  • Merle goes in search of Van. While she is at it, she speaks briefly to Oruto.

  • In Pallas, Millerna is seen giving orders to her maids regarding the cleaning-up of Hitomi. Merle is unnerved by the orders and bites a table.

  • Hitomi is given a bath by Asturian maids, and is quite embarrassed about it.
Episode 7: Unexpected Partings
  • King Aston is seen speaking to his two closest advisors in the courtyard after dinner. Aston explains that he has hired someone to arrange the kidnapping of Hitomi by lizard men. A flashback reveals that the person hired to arrange the abduction is the Mole Man. Surprise! As the men speak of Hitomi she is shown in a vision, praying in her Asturian dress in front of the dual moons.

  • Hitomi has a dream in which a pleasant tarot reading is interrupted when the Chariot card comes to life. Hitomi then wakes up with a start.

  • After waking, Hitomi notices Merle curled up on her bed. Hitomi yanks on the covers, causing Merle to slide off like a slab of bacon. Hitomi then proceeds to leave the room for some fresh air.

The episodes above are the only ones that were manipulated for time. The animation of the later episodes was monitored much more carefully, so as to prevent excess material — much to the disappointment of fans everywhere, who would have loved the chance for more character development.
